What TV Series Has The Best Ending? George RR Martin Responds, Ignores ‘GOT’

1 years ago By Movies Desk

Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin, known for crafting some of television’s finest episodes, responded to Vanity Fair’s recent article ranking the “best TV episodes of the past quarter century” on his official blog, “Not a Blog.”

In the article, various TV series were praised for their standout episodes, including surprising entries like Grey’s Anatomy and Friends, as well as expected choices like The Sopranos and Succession. Martin acknowledged some of his personal favorites, such as Mad Men and Breaking Bad, and even gave a nod to Black Mirror’s beloved episode “San Junipero.”

Game of Thrones earned a spot on the list with “Blackwater,” the penultimate episode of the second season, which Martin himself penned. While it was lauded for its balance of action and character development, it stood in contrast to the later seasons’ writing, particularly the divisive series finale that left many fans dissatisfied.

However, when asked about his top pick from the list, Martin surprised readers by singling out the final episode of “SIX FEET UNDER” as the pinnacle of television finales. He described it as “the best finale in the entire history of television” and expressed his inability to fathom a better conclusion.

Created by Alan Ball, “Six Feet Under” chronicled the Fisher family’s experiences running a Los Angeles-based funeral home and earned acclaim, winning nine Emmy Awards during its five-season run that began in 2005.

Martin expressed his gratitude for being included in Vanity Fair’s list, acknowledging that no work of art is truly flawless but relishing the recognition. In his sign-off, he hinted at his ongoing pursuit of improvement in his storytelling, saying, “Regardless of how well or poorly one of my tales is received, I always want to do better the next time I sit down in front of the computer.”

“Game of Thrones,” which ran for eight successful seasons on HBO and garnered 59 Emmy Awards, remains available for streaming on HBO Max.
